UPDATE: First off, Edward carter has his own facebook page now: www.facebook.com/EdwardCartersStairwayToHeaven! He has become very popular and is actually receiving quite a bit of media attention. We are so happy for this because he is spreading joy to everyone and sharing his zest for life- and the fight for his right to party for a bit longer!
He is seemingly the same ol' busy, wind up toy, little guy we're used to, but we received some sobering news today that his white blood decll counts were low, and this surprised us a bit. He is so peppy and go-git-em, it is really on occasion, hard to remember he is sick! We were told as long as his temperature stays below 103 we're doing ok- and it is...so for now he's cool.
His Bucket List has been growing quickly and there are so many cool items on there. YOU can participate too, which is actually one of the best parts- get your own Flat Edward! It's a cut out of Edward that you can take with you on adventures of your own- then post the pics with us and show us what Flat edward is up to. This way he can really do everything on his list, even though his real time may be limited! You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for a higher resolution version!
Edward Carter is a funny little 4 year old Chinese Crested mix dog, that has been diagnosed with cancer (in the form of red mole- like growths all over). The shelter told us that he had some skin issues (he is very itchy and yeasty), but then they got the biopsy back...however more tests are needed to determine what kind of cancer and whether/ how/ if it can be treated.
This little guy spoke to us- we don't normally knowingly take in hospice care dogs, as this is not what most of our fosters can or will do - but this guy received a lot of interest and support online when we posted the sad news, and his goofy little face sold us. We decided we'd indeed offer him a place to live out his life, to die in the arms of people who love him, rather than alone and relatively anonymously, in a shelter. Our goal is to give this guy the best "last hoorah" we can.
This of course primarily involves making sure we can fund his treatment. We need funding to cover the further testing (bloodwork, xrays/ ultrasounds, biopsy) and potentially chemotherapy if it is determined this will help him. We estimate this is a minimum for $5,000 over the next few months to make sure he is comfortable and well cared for.
The next part of our goal is a bit more fun - Edward has started a Bucket List of things he wants to do before he dies. We're hoping people will make a donation for his care, and suggest bucket list items for him to do! We will document the fun with photos and video, and we will offer perks and rewards for being one of Edward's supporters.
He already tackled part of his first Bucket List items- which was hiking to the top of Mt. Si, a popular hike in this area (often done to prepare for mountainerring climbs like Mt. Rainier). I feel terrible that the human at the end of the leash (me) was the one needing to turn around before he reached the top...so someone who is more in shape will have to take him to complete that one! We can't wait to hear your suggestions and ideas for his exciting Rockin' Bucket List Tour!
